The past year was an active and prosperous time for YITIS. Our membership numbers grew and we helped organized a variety of interesting events that benefited both our members and the Yukon IT industry at large. Therefore I believe, as linked to our vision, YITIS was very successful in exploring and building new markets, growing business capacity and advocating interests during 2009.
As for how we aided in exploring and building new markets, YITIS organized and led two group sessions with Government of Yukon, Northwestel, City of Whitehorse and Yukon Energy to discuss their corporate usage of Microsoft SharePoint. Both of these events were well attended, giving YITIS members a chance to network with key representatives and find out what role their companies could play in this type of market. YITIS also led a Yukon Energy meet-up in June 2009 where we discussed their IT plans and opportunities, as well as supported the Technology Meltdown series held at the offices of Outside the Cube and Outcrop Yukon.
In regards to growing business capacity, we arranged for an instructor from Cooper to teach a three-day Interaction Design practicum at Yukon College. The course proved to be very popular and insightful endaveour for our membership.
Lastly, in terms of advocating interests, YITIS kept its regular monthly schedule of sessions with ICT and got together with Highways & Public Works Minister Archie Lang at our annual meeting. The result of maintaining these relationships is highly visible: several of our members’ companies have grown significantly and YG investment in Yukon IT remains open & strong.
Looking forward, YITIS is currently working with Economic Development to organize another Yukon IT Conference - our tentative conference date is October 2010 - as well as collaborating with Microsoft Canada to host a SharePoint Developer Certification course/exam later this spring. Finally, we’ve been in discussions with Air North to host a meet-up very soon.
As stated earlier, it’s been a busy and prosperous 2009, with 2010 showing no signs of YITIS’ momentum letting up. With recent significant investments and improvements in our technology infrastructure (cable Internet & HSPA mobile network) the next few years are sure to represent an exciting and interesting new chapter in the evolution of our Yukon IT industry.
